Fourth Friday May 25th

Poetry from Harry Eyres and David Bottomley.  Music from Fran McGillivray & Mike Burke.

Harry Eyres has been writing poetry, at first for himself and friends, and then for a wider audience, for twenty years. He is also a columnist (he writes the Slow Lane column for the Financial Times) and keen bird-watcher and swimming-pool activist. His first poetry collection Hotel Elisio was published by Hearing Eye in 2002. Vernon Scannell praised it in the Sunday Telegraph as “an enjoyable collection of consistent accomplishment,” describing Eyres as “a mature poet…who has forged a style, pared down, cleanly chiselled, and…admirably suited to his purposes.” From 1996-2001 Harry was Poetry Editor of the Daily Express, where he established the popular Daily Poem column, featuring much new work and ‘outsider poetry’ as well as poems by better-known poets. He regularly gives poetry readings in London, at venues such as the Poetry Café in Covent Garden, Torriano Meeting House and Highgate Library. He was a Whitbread Poetry Prize judge in 2001.

David Bottomley is a performance poet, playwright and Literary Manager and a founding member and director of the London Playwright’s Collective.  As a workshop leader, he enjoys facilitating group creative writing.  He has tutored script writing workshops for Spread the Word, Crisis, Battersea Literary Festivals, Brockley Jack Writers’ Workshop, and Write Now Festivals.  He ran the first London Theatre Writing Award judging panel for Festival Fringe 2010.  He has performed his poetry with the International Workshop Festival, Tall Lighthouse, Penned in the Margins, Poets of London, Apples and Snakes, and at various London festivals.  He will be taking his first one man show to Edinburgh this summer.

This Friday he will be accompanied by the lovely Isabel Caetano da Rocha on flute.

Fran McGillivray  and Mike Burke have played folk, roots and blues clubs and festivals throughout the British Isles and Europe both as a duo and fronting the five piece band So Long Angel.  Original songs form the core of Fran & Mike’s music and these are complemented by soulful, dynamic and powerful interpretations of blues, and British and American folk songs.  Fran and Mike released their acoustic CD “Restless” in February 2006  Festival appearances in 2006 included Folk on the Pier at Cromer in May and Broadstairs Folk Festival in August.
